Togo

The small country of Togo lies in Western Africa, between Benin and Ghana. Togo received independence in April 1960 from French-administered UN trusteeship, and its government is currently in transition to multiparty democratic rule. The total area of 56,785 sq. km offers natural resources such as phosphates, limestone, marble, and arable land. The population is 6,961,049, which is 99% African (comprised of 37 tribes, the largest being Ewe, Mina and Kabre). In January 2012, Togo assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2012-13 term.
