Q. I hear it is cold in Michigan, when should I expect to have to wear warmer clothes, and where should shop for them?
A. The weather begins to cool down in mid- to late-September, with a first frost (below 32ºF) around that time. There are several places to shop for pre-owned clothing and apartment items that will keep your investment low. Salvation Army Thrift Store on State Street, Recycle Ann Arbor’s ReUse Center on Industrial Highway, Kiwanis Thrift Sale on Washington and First Streets, and Value World on Maple Road in Ann Arbor are some of the places where previous scholars have shopped.
Q. Where might I be able to purchase a new laptop computer?
A. The U-M Computer Showcase, located in the Michigan Union on Central Campus and in Pierpont Commons on North Campus, sell computers. Another shop frequented by scholars is Best Buy (3100 Lohr Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48108, Phone: 734-741-1357). Best Buy has a wide variety of electronic equipment including phones, laptops, digital projectors, and cameras.
Q. Is the water from the faucet drinkable?
A. All the water available from drinking fountains or faucets in kitchens or bathrooms has been purified and is safe to drink. You may want to purchase a water filter or purchase drinking water at the grocery store if you do not care for the taste of tap water.
Q. Is there a refrigerator in my apartment?
A. Yes. Each apartment has a fully furnished kitchen with an electric cook stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator (with freezer), dishwasher, and garbage disposal. Each apartment also has a clothes washer and dryer. Cooking pans and pots, dishes, glassware, and eating utensils are also provided.
Q. What should we expect regarding food?
A. If you cook, there are several grocery stores your residence where you can purchase food to prepare. If you do not cook, there are many restaurants near the Courtyard Apartments, as well as restaurants in Pierpont Commons on campus.
Q. Where can I shop for groceries?
A. There is a Kroger grocery store not too far from your apartment at 2641 Plymouth Road. There is also a Busch’s nearby at 2020 Green Road. Way 1 Supermarket at 2789 Plymouth Road is a very large grocery store that sells Asian Food products. All three stores are on Ann Arbor bus route #2. A bit farther away is Meijer at 3825 Carpenter Road. Ann Arbor bus route 5C and 22 go to this Meijer. There are many specialty grocery stores in the Ann Arbor area including Fatou African Caribbean Market at 4 N Adams St, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, (734) 485-4370.
Q. Are raw fruits and vegetables safe to eat?
A. Raw fruits and vegetables you purchase at the grocery store or farmer’s market are safe to eat, but should be washed first.
