  • About

Pietro A. Shakarian is an M.A. student in REES with a focus on the history of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Specifically, he is interested in examining dissent in the periphery and is currently researching the history of the nonconformist Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex in Soviet Armenia and its role in the glasnost-era Armenian national movement. In 2013, Pietro wrote the introduction to the republication of the 1932 book The Red Flag at Ararat by Aghavnie "Ave" Yeghenian, one of the first English-language accounts ever written on Soviet Armenia. This was published by the Gomidas Institute in London, which also published his study of the Armenian environmental movement Haze Over Ararat online. This was later translated into Armenian by the independent researcher Lilit Grigoryan in Yerevan.
