  • About

Pietro A. Shakarian is an M.A. student in REES with a focus on the history and culture of Russia and the former USSR. Specifically, he is interested in examining dissent in the periphery and is currently researching the history of the nonconformist Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex in Soviet Armenia and its role in the glasnost-era Armenian national movement. Pietro has also written a history of the Armenian environmental movement entitled "Haze Over Ararat," published online by the Gomidas Institute in London. With Gomidas, he also worked to republish books of historical interest on the Caucasus in the Tsarist and Soviet eras, including The Red Flag of Ararat (1932) by Aghavnie Yeghenian and two forthcoming republications: Transcaucasia (1854) by August von Haxthausen and Journey to Ararat (1846) by Friedrich Parrot. In addition, Pietro has written analyses on Russia and the former Soviet space for The Nation, Hetq Online, and Russia Direct.
