Research/Teaching Specialization: Professor Porter completed his doctorate in Comparative Literature at Stanford in 1996 and joined the faculty of the University of Michigan the same year. His research interests include eighteenth-century studies, travel literature, history of aesthetics, China in the European imagination, material culture, anthropology of taste. Professor Porter holds a joint appointment in the Departments of English and Comparative Literature. Professor Porter's current book project concerns British responses to Chinese visual culture in the eighteenth century. The chapters he is working on now explore the possible relationship between certain visual motifs on late Ming and early Qing porcelains and the literary preoccupations of their female consumers in England.
