Research/Teaching Specialization: Professor Skar's main interests are the ways that people in pre-modern China imagined and understood the natural world, the human body, and the realms of the sacred, and in how they combined these views to situate themselves in China's official and non-official culture. After receiving his BA in Asian Studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, he went on to study the History of Science, Medicine, and Religion in Chinese Culture at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his Ph.D. in Asian and MIddle Eastern Studies in 2003. He has taught history at the universities of McGill, Tufts, and Colorado, and is currently teaching history at the University of Michigan - Dearborn.
