Research/Teaching Specialization: Professor Xie specializes in social stratification, demography, statistical methods, and sociology of science. Professor Xie also has affiliations with the UM Department of Statistics, the Population Studies Center, and the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research. Professor Xie's book "Women in Science: Career Processes and Outcomes," with Kimberlee A. Shauman, was recently published by Harvard University Press (October 2003). One of the most comprehensive studies of gender differences in science careers ever conducted, "Women in Science" provides a systematic account of how U.S. youth are selected into and out of science education in early life, and how social forces affect career outcomes later in the science labor market.
