Description: Lecture given for the "Conversations on Europe" series. The eastward enlargement of the European Union and the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey have renewed the debate on Europe's borders once again. Where does Europe begin and where does it end?

Author Bio: Aleksander Kwaśniewski, was first elected as Poland’s president in 1995. During his presidency, Kwaśniewski co-authored the constitution of the Third Republic of Poland, signing it into law in 1997. He piloted his country to membership in NATO and has been an active supporter of further alliance enlargement. Kwaśniewski campaigned for approval of the European Union accession treaty in 2003 and saw Poland become a member on May 1, 2004 before completing his second term a year later. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group, Atlantic Council of the United States, Amicus Europae Foundation in Warsaw, International Center for Political Studies in Kiev, International Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation, and Board of Yalta European Strategy. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies at the University of Michigan.
