European History Topics Course

HIST 481.001 The Uses of the Past in 20th Century Europe: From the Great War to the House of European History (1914-2012). Mon/Wed, 1:00 to 2:30 pm, 1339 Mason Hall

The course explores political uses of the past in Europe from the early twentieth century to the present day. Was George Orwell right when he wrote that who controls the present, controls the past, and consequently controls the future? Students will consider various materials (arts, films, symbols, rituals) in order to understand how the past has served many political purposes for nationals, fascists, but also for European Democrats. Everyone is welcome to participate in our civic duty to fight against instrumentalisation and distortion of the past.
