    Alan Teo, M.D., is a psychiatrist who completed his undergraduate education at Stanford University, and medical school and residency at the University of California, San Francisco. His current primary research interest is the relationship between social relationships and mental health. His studies have investigated the role of quality of social relationships, loneliness, and social contact in mental illnesses such as major depression and social anxiety disorder. Additionally, his work explores cultural aspects of social isolation, with a focus on Japan and the phenomenon of hikikomori. Also interested in workforce training issues, his previous publications have focused on medical education curriculum and systems.
