Dr. Liang's research interests focus on health dynamics, quality of life, and geriatric care from a cross-cultural comparative perspective. His current research centers around three major themes: (a) quality of life at the individual and population levels, (b) dynamic models of health and health care in old age, and (c) geriatric care management and policy. In 1985 Liang initiated the Comparative Aging Research Program (CARP) which has been a joint venture involving investigators at the University of Michigan, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, University of Tokyo, and the National Bureau of Health Promotion in Taiwan. Longitudinal data bases, involving population based samples of elderly people, have been established and maintained in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and China.
