Visiting Scholar Program


Each year the Center for Korean Studies welcomes to the University of Michigan a number of scholars, intellectuals, and artists for one or two years of study and research on topics related to Korea. As active participants in our educational, intellectual and artistic community, Visiting Scholars are important resource for CKS faculty and students, and for the Korean-American community around Ann Arbor. These scholars are granted status as a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan with access to the renowned university library system and its computing centers.

 

 Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D., or equivalent evidence of professional achievement
  2. Research on topics related to Korea

Application Procedure:

 

A cover letter should be addressed to the Center for Korean Studies and accompanied by the following documents:

  1. A curriculum vitae in English. Please include home and business addresses, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, date and place or birth, and a complete list of publications and professional activities.
  2. A proposal in English outlining the research that will be undertaken while in residence at the University of Michigan. The proposal should be no more than 3 pages in length.
  3. A certified statement of financial support from the applicant's place of employment of financial institution.

Funding: 

 

Please note the Center for Korean Studies is unable to provide financial support for its visiting scholars. As required by University policy, each scholar must provide the visiting department with proof of financial support during their proposed period of stay.

 

Mandatory Health Insurance:

 

In addition, every Visiting Scholar and all accompanying dependents must have health insurance coverage that meets the standards of the University of Michigan. If you do not have health insurance, you will be required to go to the UM International Center as soon as you are on campus and enroll in the International Student and Scholar Health Insurance Plan. If you have health insurance, you will be required to go take your insurance forms to the International Center in order to receive a waiver from this requirement.

 

Scholarly Responsibilities:

 

Visiting Scholars affiliates with the Center for Korean Studies are expected to participate in the Center's intellectual community, and are asked to submit a report on the progress of their research upon completion of their stay.
