Description:
The Qur'an has managed to acquire a variety of functions in Islamic religious history. The challenge has always been to try and identify what does the Qur'an mean to the Muslims at a specific historical period, and can one speak of general features that characterize Muslim's attitudes to the Qur'an across the ages. In this lecture I will try and identify some common features of the role played by the Qur'an in Islamic religious history, using the modern period to understand the shifts that one can detect in the story of the Qur'an in Islamic tradition.
