Concurrent Undergraduate-Graduate Study (CUGS) Program

CREES offers a Concurrent Undergraduate-Graduate Study (CUGS) Program leading to an undergraduate degree and a terminal master's degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies in five years. The program is open to REES concentrators as well as concentrators in other fields who are focusing on the region. A maximum of 15 credit hours elected in CUGS may be counted toward both the bachelor's and master's degree. The CUGS Program gives outstanding students an opportunity to earn a graduate degree at an accelerated pace, giving them a jump-start on further graduate work or the job market.

Admission to CUGS is limited and depends heavily on the student having exhausted the undergraduate resources of his or her department so that graduate study is the appropriate and logical next step in the student's program. During the first semester of junior year, the prospective student should discuss participation in CUGS with his/her undergraduate advisor and the chair of his/her department of concentration. The chair may then bring the student's academic record and interests to the attention of the CREES Director or may recommend the student talk with the CREES Director.

Conditions for Admission

  • Minimum grade point average 3.7.
  • At least 90 credits earned at time of application.
  • The student must then receive the recommendation of the chair of the undergraduate department/program, as well as the Assistant Dean for Student Academic Affairs for regular LSA students, or one of the Directors of the Honors Program for Honors students, or the Director (Director's representative) in the Residential College for RC students.

  • A Rackham application for graduate study.
  • A CUGS Information and Election Form (LSA students only) OR CUGS Information and Concentration Form (all other undergraduates).
