Copernicus/A&D Lecture. “A Stranger in a Strange Land: Traveling East to Find the World.”

Monday, March 14, 2011
12:00 AM
Art + Architecture Auditorium (Room 2104), 2000 Bonisteel.

Richard Noyce, author. Sponsors: Copernicus Endowment, School of Art & Design.

This lecture sets the speaker’s involvement with the Krakow International Print Triennial and international printmaking in general within the context of his personal history and involvement with Poland from 1968 until the present.

Noyce will first give a concise account of the 40 plus years from his encounter with the Teatr Laboratorium of Jerzy Grotowski in 1968 until his first experience with the Krakow International Print Triennial in 1995. He will then trace his research into Polish graphic art in connection with his second book, Contemporary Graphic Art in Poland, referencing his interactions with artists in their studios and in galleries. Noyce will discuss his close association with the Triennial from 2003 – including the sudden death of its president, Professor Witold Skulicz, in 2009 – to the present, detailing some of the trends and problems that arose, and the shifting nature of international printmaking. He will consider what has been achieved and indications of future developments, not only with the Triennial, but also in international printmaking.

The lecture will be accompanied by a presentation of historical and contemporary images.
