Summer FLAS Fellowships are available for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
The Fellowships provide tuition and mandatory fees up to $5,000 and a $2,500 stipend toward intensive study of a Center specific language at an approved summer language program. Undergraduates must be at the intermediate or advanced level. Students must enroll in a summer intensive language program that teaches the equivalent of one academic year (two terms) of the approved language as taught by the University of Michigan. Students may enroll at the University of Michigan Summer Language Institute, another approved program in the United States, or an approved program outside the United States. In order to qualify, the program must be at least six weeks long and have at least 140 contact hours for intermediate level and 120 contact hours for advanced level. All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. Students interested in studying languages specific to a particular region of the world but not taught at U of M should contact the FLAS coordinator for eligibility requirements and more information.
