FLAS Graduate

Graduate Student and Professional School Student FLAS Fellowships

A Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship provides tuition support and a stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. The program's priority is to encourage the study of less commonly taught languages. FLAS Fellowships are administered by the International Institute and the associated area center and are awarded competitively through annual fellowship competitions. The U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) funds these awards under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act. The amount of funding and number of awards granted is contingent upon annual US/ED program approval, federal regulations, as well as continued congressional funding, all of which may change from year to year.

Academic Year & Summer FLAS Fellowships

Academic Year Graduate FLAS Fellowships are awarded to UM graduate and professional students at the master’s and doctoral level to study modern foreign languages and related area studies, international studies, and/or international aspects of professional studies. Academic Year FLAS Fellows receive support for tuition, mandatory fees, and living expenses during the fall and winter terms. Amounts for tuition support and stipend for AY2014-15 have not been finalized. It is anticipated that support for tuition and required fees for AY2014-15 will be $18,000 or full tuition and required fees, whichever is lower. In previous years, International Institute and the Fellow’s home school/college and/or home department/program have supplemented the tuition portion of this fellowship with additional funding to provide full tuition, required fees and fellowship benefits for each Fellow; continuation of this supplemental funding in AY2014-15 is contingent on successful (re)enactment of cost sharing agreements between the International Institute and relevant home unit(s) of the Fellow. Stipend is expected to be $15,000 for AY2014-15.

Eligible students in any discipline and department may apply for Academic Year FLAS fellowships. Priority will be given to students who have completed at least one year of formal language training at the University of Michigan with a demonstrated strong commitment to center specific regional studies.
