Educational Materials

CSEAS is happy to help teachers integrate learning about the gamelan into their classrooms.  To that end, we offer teacher workshops on the gamelan taught by Dr. Vera Flaig, available for SB-CEU credit. Material for these workshops is available through the Gamelan Education Project website, below.

For more general information on shadow puppetry of Java, which is always performed with gamelan music accompaniment, please see the Gamelan and Wayang at U-M (Powerpoint presentation).

CSEAS is able to provide presentations to your classrooms on the performing arts of Java. Please contact us at cseas@umich.edu.

Gamelan Education Project
The University of Michigan is one of the few places in the United States where one can regularly enjoy gamelan music. Gamelan, the gong orchestra of Java, is an enchanting and ancient cultural form. Visit this site, developed by U-M students and alumni in conjunction with CSEAS, to learn more about how you can teach gamelan in your classroom.
