Patricia Steinhoff, Professor of Sociology

Patricia Steinhoff is professor of sociology at the University of Hawaii and currently serves as graduate chair for the department. She holds a PhD in sociology from Harvard University (1969) and has taught at the University of Hawaii since 1968. Professor Steinhoff is the founding director of the university’s Center for Japanese Studies. She is the author or editor of nineteen books, including three in Japanese, and has conducted extensive research on Japanese social movements in their interaction with the state. She is currently writing a book on Japan’s invisible civil society.
