Supporting Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Michigan
We encourage you to make donations to Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) at the University of Michigan. Your contribution to our gift fund will guarantee that U-M students will have an opportunity to study the cultures, histories, languages, and peoples of Latin American and the Caribbean and contribute to scholarship and involvement in the region. A contribution to our gift fund is the most significant way you can help secure the University of Michigan's position as a leader in the field of Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
Outright gifts may be made to LACS in a variety of ways and are deductible as allowed by law. LACS accepts cash, checks, or credit cards; matching gifts (please send the appropriate paperwork from the matching agency with your gift); and securities (stock gifts). We invite you to complete this form, and send your gift to:
LACS, University of Michigan
1080 South University, Suite 2607
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1106.
If you are interested in working with your financial advisors to make a planned gift to Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Michigan, please visit the Office of Development's website. The University of Michigan then works with donors and their financial advisors to design a trust or bequest.
Why Give to LACS?
Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) at the University of Michigan has grown into one of the nation's foremost institutes for interdisciplinary research and training on the Americas. A constituent unit of the International Institute, LACS has the distinction of being the only area studies unit at the University of Michigan to begin as an undergraduate concentration program. In recent years we have added an undergraduate minor, a graduate certificate program, and a nationally recognized program in Quechua (the "language of the Incas").
The growing stature of LACS was formally recognized in 1997, when we were awarded funding from the Department of Education (Title VI) to support Foreign Languages and Area Studies by our graduate students. Most recently, in 2006, LACS became one of twenty-four U.S. Department of Education-supported National Resource Centers for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
LACS's outstanding faculty of 60 area specialists come from 12 liberal arts departments and 4 professional schools. The regional strengths of LACS faculty - covering the Andean Republics, Brazil, the Caribbean, and Mexico and Central America - encompass virtually the entire Latin American and Caribbean area. LACS has particular depth in the disciplines of anthropology, history, Latin American literatures, natural resources and environment, health sciences, business, political science, and sociology.
Since the mid-1990s, LACS has been building a modest gift fund to supplement federal and university funding. The gift fund currently supports innovative regional programming, visiting lecturers, conferences, special courses, and other worthy projects. As the fund grows, we plan to launch an endowment fund to support student research and on-the-ground training, as well as giving a more regular support for our programming budget. Because federal appropriations to support area studies centers are always at risk, LACS must find ways to assure its financial security independent of federal support.
