The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) serves undergraduate students in several ways. LACS’ concentration (major) and minor programs are both broad-based and multidisciplinary, offering students a panoramic perspective of the region and the opportunity to tighten the focus almost anywhere. LACS honors concentrators tighten the focus even further, working closely with faculty advisors, conducting in-depth investigations into particular areas of interest, which culminate in an honors thesis. In support of these students, LACS offers resources and guidance to students interested in studying or interning abroad as well as fellowships for students conducting research projects. Notably, LACS also organizes the competition for very generous U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for U-M students studying Portuguese or Quechua language.
