Partnerships

China's emergence as one of the most dynamic players on the world stage isn't limited to just the economic sphere. Chinese institutions of higher education are undergoing dramatic transformations and modernization too. As part of its broad effort to remain a preeminent university committed to interdisciplinary research and collaborative international partnerships, the University of Michigan has entered into several agreements of cooperation with top Chinese institutions.

 

SPECIFIC AGREEMENTS

UM-Beijing Normal University Memorandum of Understanding on Collaborations in the Areas of Psychology, Education, and Cognitive Neuroscience

Beijing Normal University (BNU) Partners: School of Psychology, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning, School of Education
UM and BNU have agreed to each provide up to USD$13,000 annually to support activities related to a Research Seed-Project Program and Joint Event Related Potential and Eye-Tracking Laboratories.

UM-China Scholarship Council Agreement

UM and China Scholarship Council (CSC) jointly conduct a postdoctoral program with the goal of fostering academic exchange and research collaboration between Chinese scholars and UM faculties. On an annual basis, UM and CSC provide financial and logistical support to up to five Chinese postdoctoral scholars during their study and research in UM for one year. The scholars will return to China and carry out their research there the following year, during which they will continue to be financially supported by UM.

UM-Chinese Academy of Sciences Memorandum of Understanding on Collaborations in the Areas of Psychology and Education

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Partner: Institute of Psychology UM and CAS have agreed to each provide up to USD$13,000 annually to support activities related to a Research Seed-Project Program and a Joint Event Related Potential Laboratory.

UM-Fudan University Memorandum on Establishing the Institute for Gender Studies

In order to promote research and teaching of gender studies in China, UM and Fudan University have established the Institute for Gender Studies (IGS) and implemented a Graduate Credential Program in Gender Studies at Fudan. The IGS functions as an interdisciplinary and inter-college academic unit that facilitates gender studies teaching, research, exchange, and collaboration among scholars of multiple disciplines at UM and Fudan. Coursework for the Graduate Credential Program will take place at Fudan, and courses will be taught by faculty from UM and Chinese universities. UM grants the Graduate Credential in Gender Studies to students upon successful completion of the program. Both UM and Fudan are responsible for raising funds for various aspects of the IGS and the Graduate Credential Program, with Fudan providing a majority of the funding for operating the IGS.

UM Medical School - Fudan University Memorandum on Academic Exchange in the Area of Medical Science

In an effort to facilitate academic exchange in the field of medical science, UM Medical School and Fudan nominate respective faculty, residents, and/or students for exchanges contingent on approval of the other institution. The maximum total number of exchange visitors is three per year. Expenses related to faculty exchanges are covered by the home institution of the respective faculty, whereas expenses incurred in resident/student exchange are covered by the resident/student.

UM-SJTU Memorandum of Agreement on Collaborative Research in Chemical Genomics and Drug Discovery

The Center for Chemical Genomics (CCG) at UM Life Science Institute (LSI) agrees to collaborate with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Center (TCM) at SJTU in order to develop new chemical libraries, phytochemical and synthetic compounds for chemical genomics and to pursue promising compounds as pharmaceutical leads through post-screening synthetic chemistry. The partners agree to provide each other access to research laboratory space and facilities, in addition to establishing a joint personnel training and student exchange program.

Agreement between UM School of Education and Tianjin Normal University

This agreement provides framework for student and faculty exchanges during the summers of 2005 and 2006.

UM College of Engineering-Tianjin University Memorandum of Agreement

The agreement outlines cooperation in the following areas: joint research activities and publications, exchange of information in fields of interest to both institutions, and exchange of faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students for study and research. Specifically in regard to student exchange, the agreement establishes a maximum of three graduate or undergraduate tuition fellowships each year, and the duration of the tuition fellowships is one or a maximum of two academic terms.

Agreement for Educational Cooperation between Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua Unviersity, and UM School of Art & Design

The two parties agree to engage in student, faculty and publication exchanges as well as other collaborative activities. Financial support for all such activities is to be fully discussed on a case-by-case basis.
