Fellowships for Summer Study
The Center for Japanese Studies provides limited fellowships to graduate students pursuing studies on Japan for summer study. These fellowships may be used for summer intensive language study, research related travel to Japan, research travel to domestic archives, libraries, and museums, participation in specialized workshops, expenses for unpaid internships or public service projects related to Japan, full time thesis/dissertation research and writing, or full time preparation for PhD preliminary examination and dissertation prospectus.
Eligibility
All students who are currently registered at the University of Michigan in a graduate or professional degree program at the master or doctoral level are eligible to apply. Students who are currently applying for admission to graduate study are not eligible for summer funding. Students who expect to graduate in Winter 2010 are not eligible.
Fellowship Amount and Disbursement
Summer fellowship awards are capped at $5,000. Fellowship awards are disbursed at the beginning of the Spring-Summer term.
Applying for Fellowships
The Center for Japanese Studies holds an annual fellowship competition during the winter term. The application deadline is February 1 of each year for funding for summer of the same year. Funds become available at the beginning of the Spring-Summer Term.

Fellowship Reports
Students who are awarded summer fellowships will be required to complete a short fellowship report summarizing their activities and expenses. Reports are due to the CJS Student Services Coordinator on September 30. Fellowship recipients will be given instructions early in September.
