RESEARCH
The final mission of CMENAS is to promote research and scholarship on the Middle Eastern and North African region among students and faculty at the University of Michigan. Among the more than 50 CMENAS faculty associates are many internationally recognized scholars, whose work CMENAS supports through research and publishing grants. Furthermore, CMENAS contributes to their scholarly activities through the sponsorship of conferences and lecture series at U-M, some of which result in scholarly publications. For example, CMENAS recently published an edited volume on Islam, Democracy and the State in Algeria, which was based on an international conference attended by scholars from the United States, Algeria, Canada, and Europe. Other conference volumes have been published in a CMENAS book series on the Middle East. Language texts authored by U-M faculty and published by CMENAS continue to be popular in classrooms across the country.
CMENAS has contributed to scholarship through its support of the U-M editorial offices for two major academic journals, International Journal of Middle East Studies and JMEWS (Journal of Middle East Women's Studies). Indeed, CMENAS played a major role in launching JMEWS, a journal that will be a major resource for students and scholars of Middle East Women's Studies.
Through activities in these four areas, CMENAS plays an exceptionally important role within the University of Michigan, the state of Michigan, local communities of Middle Eastern and North African origin, and within the Middle Eastern region itself. Indeed, with the Middle East occupying an increasingly important role in world affairs and in United States foreign policy in particular, the activities and programs of National Resource Centers such as CMENAS are more vital than ever. Thus, we invite you to join CMENAS in its crucial and fascinating work.
