Graduate Certificate in Chinese Studies


  

The Center for Chinese Studies offers a 15-credit hour Graduate Certificate Program in Chinese Studies. This certificate is intended for UM graduate-level students in LS&A departments and professional schools, as well as students who have completed a Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan or another university within the past 5 years. The goal of the certificate is to provide a program of study grounded in in-depth interdisciplinary understandings of China to graduate students whose academic and career trajectories require China-focused knowledge and training.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  • CCS 501, Social Scientific Studies of Historical and Contemporary China (3 credits)
  • CCS 502, Humanistic Studies of Historical and Contemporary China (3 credits)
  • Electives: The remaining 9 credit hours consist of 3 China-related graduate level courses,   taken in at least three departments or schools (including CCS).
  • Language requirements: A basic level of proficiency in the Chinese language is required  for completion of the Certificate. This can be demonstrated through successful coursework (second year competency) or by a proficiency exam.

Application deadline is March 31 for fall term and October 15 for winter term.


Students in any Rackham program must submit:

  • Rackham Dual Degree/Program Application, signed by the current program's Chair 
  • Current UM transcript
  • Statement of purpose that explains the applicant's interest in the Certificate Program and his or her background in Chinese Studies
  • Two letters of recommendation 
  • Language report

Up to 1/6 the total hours of the UM master's program not to exceed half of the certificate may be double-counted. Completion of the graduation requirements for both programs will result in two separate citations on the academic transcript and two separate diplomas.

Students in any non-Rackham or non-UM schools must submit:

  • Rackham application and fee 
  • Official transcript from all universities attended
  • Statement of purpose that explains the applicant's interest in the Certificate Program and his or her background in Chinese Studies
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Language report
  • GRE or GMAT, LSAT, MCAT scores for applicants from Professional Schools
  • TOEFL scores for international applicants


FUNDING

Graduate Certificate students are eligible to apply for funding during the annual CCS Fellowship Competition. The application deadline is February 1. Please contact the Student Services Coordinator in CCS for more information.


ADVISING

Graduate Certificate students are encouraged to meet with the CCS Academic Advisor at least once per year to evaluate progress toward the certificate. It is also important that the student's home department or school is aware of his/her intent to pursue a certificate in CCS. The student will be personally responsible for letting the departmental advisor know of such intent.
