Conference Travel Support


  

CJS provides travel support to UM graduate and professional students specializing in Japanese studies attending academic meetings in the United States or overseas.

This funding program will provide support for transportation and lodging expenses and be awarded only in cases where other sources of funding are exhausted or inadequate. Applicants, if they have not already done so, are required to apply to Rackham, International Institute, and their respective departments or professional schools for travel funds before applying to the Center The funds will be paid as reimbursements of expenses in compliance with the University and International Institute's travel guidelines. Candidates must secure approval prior to travel.

Eligibility

  • UM graduate students specializing in Japanese studies attending academic meetings or workshops in the U.S. or overseas to present papers, participate in a poster session, chair panels, act as discussants, or serve in an executive capacity (e.g., to attend a business meeting as an officer).
  • UM graduate students specializing in Japanese studies attending academic meetings in the U.S. or overseas for professional development, such as job interviews.

Deadlines

Last business day of October, January, March, annually.  For academic year 2009-10, the deadlines are October 30, January 29, and March 31.  All application materials must be received at the Center by the close of business on these dates.

Funding Policies

The limit is $350 per person per conference. As a rule, the Center will support one instance of domestic travel per applicant per year. A second request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Requests for foreign travel support will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be funded at a higher level subject to funding availability.

Application

Please submit the following materials to the Student Services Coordinator at the Center for Japanese Studies.  Electronic submission by email attachment is preferred.  Please send your application packet to cjsadmissions@umich.edu.

  1. Student Conference Travel Grant Application and Agreement Form (Note: this form has been updated for 2009-10)
  2. A statement of about 500 words describing the nature of your participation at the conference and how it contributes to your professional development.
  3. Budget statement outlining expenses for airfare, ground transportation, lodging, and conference registration fee. Please note that CJS will not cover meals.
  4. For foreign travel and travel for professional development purposes: A letter of support from your faculty advisor.
