South Asia Related Student Groups at Michigan

This list represents some, but certainly not all, of the Michigan student groups that focus on South Asia or cultural aspects of South Asia.  New groups may be created at any time, so if the group you wish existed isn't on the list, ask around and you may find others interested in establishing a new group.  And if your group isn't listed below please contact us so that we can add you.

Asha--Ann Arbor
Asha's goal is to provide education to underprivileged children in India.

Bengali Students Association (BSA)
The Bengali Students Association at the University of Michigan spreads knowledge of and increases awareness of the Bengal region and issues pertaining to its people, culture, language, history, economics, and politics to the University's campus community.

Hindu Students Council (HSC)
Provides an atmosphere conducive to Hindu worship and education regarding Hinduism and seeks to foster awareness of issues dealing with Hindus and Hinduism.  The HSC also endeavors to serve the public in accordance with the principles and ideals of Hinduism.

Indian American Student Association (IASA)
IASA serves to promote various aspects of Indian culture and heritage through an assortment of events that raise political, social, and cultural awareness, as well as fulfill goals aimed at community building and service.

Indian Classical Music and Dance Group (ICMD)
The ICMD represents a community for those interested in a venue for performing Indian classical music and dance at the University of Michigan and thereby also engenders interest in Indian classical art among a wide spectrum of people within the University community.

Indian Students Association (ISA)
ISA aims to create a social network amongst the Indian community on campus and give them an opportunity to enjoy Indian customs and traditions. ISA also contributes to the diverse community by participating in activities organized by other student organizations.

Helping students of Indian subcontinent origin transition into business school life. Encouraging social and professional interaction among students from the subcontinent. Career advice and mentoring.

Kitabmandal
Kitabmandal is a CSAS and Rackham sponsored group open to faculty, students, and members of the public.  Kitabmandal meets for serious critical discussion of work that helps understanding and appreciation of South Asian cultures and societies in the past and present.

Maize Mirchi (MM)
The mission of Maize Mirchi is to create an organization in which those involved can enjoy making music with others of similar interest while also providing entertainment to the public in the form of Indian-themed a cappella music.

MAPI Medical Students
To promote the health of South Asians in the United States and abroad. To educate medical students about the health issues concerning South Asians.

Maya Dance Troupe (MAYA)
MAYA is the only Indian classical fusion dance troupe on Michigan's campus. We strive to promote South Asian culture through an artistic and disciplined form of performing arts.

Through bhangra, a dance originating in northern India, we strive to promote diversity, awareness and multiculturalism both within the campus community and within the community at large.

Muslim Students' Association
The Muslim Students' Association works for the betterment of the Muslim and Non-Muslim community on campus through community service, education and social activities.

Pakistani Students Association (PSA)
The PSA is a student run organization providing opportunities to all students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor to explore their ethnic and cultural background, promote better understanding of Pakistani people.

The Punjabi Student Organization aims to foster a greater understanding of the Punjabi tradition, heritage, and culture by educating ourselves and others in this diverse, progressive community.

RAAS Association (UMRA)
The primary goal for our organization is to bridge the gap between the students on campus and South Asian communities across the nation and even the continent. We accomplish this by hosting an annual intercollegiate Raas competition which is a lively and beautiful Indian dance. This competition is the largest of its kind in the country.

The Michigan Raas Team is dedicated to preserving the Indian culture through the vibrant dance form of Raas. We work to promote diversity and spread awareness of our traditions by performing on and off campus.

Saadhanai
Saadhanai's mission is to spread knowledge and appreciation for Indian classical music. We offer classes in tabla, sitar and vocal, perform in cultural shows and organize concerts of professional artists.

Sikh Student Association
The Sikh Student Association promotes unity among the Sikh students on campus, raises awareness of the Sikh religion, and educates everyone, including its members, about the Sikh religion.

SALSA hopes to raise awareness of South Asian political, legal, and social issue and to provide members with a space to explore issues relating to South Asian identity.

Taal Dance Team
To promote diversity in the field of dance for those interested in learning, teaching, and participating in different dance styles. The emphasis is on Indian dancing, however the group is always open to new outlets of creativity from different backgrounds.
