Description:
The Revival of Dastangoi: Urdu Storytelling in History and Practice
The talk will centre around Dastangoi, the once thriving art of Urdu storytelling in North India which came to an abrupt end with the death of the last great practitioner in 1928. Drawing on the pioneering work of the great Urdu scholar S. R. Faruqi, it will engage with the causes of its popularity and decline. The second part of the talk will focus on the revival of Dastangoi as a form of performance which has been underway since 2005.
