Weiser Slovakia Fellows

The Ronald and Eileen Weiser Professional Development Awards and Awards for Student Research and Internships in Slovakia

In 2004, Ronald Weiser, U.S. ambassador to Slovakia from 2001-04, and his wife, Eileen Lapin Weiser, made a pledge to fund The Ronald and Eileen Weiser Slovakia-University of Michigan Collaboration.

Under the auspices of this generous gift, the Ronald and Eileen Weiser Professional Development Awards supported short-term travel awards designed to stimulate sustained collaboration in research and teaching, with travel grants made available to U-M scholars and artists to visit Slovakia and their Slovak counterparts to visit U-M.

The Ronald and Eileen Weiser Awards for Student Research and Internships in Slovakia supported U-M student travel awards for summer or semester-long research projects or internships at institutions, businesses and other organizations in the Slovak Republic. Updates

In May 2009, Weiser Slovak Fellows Dr. Steven M. Donn and Dr. Peter Krcho, organized the III Kosice Neonatology Symposium, hosting 120 participants from twelve countries. This conference was the most recent of several activities that have developed from the partnership first established in 2005 with support from the Ronald and Eileen Weiser Professional Development Awards. In 2004 the Weisers made a pledge to fund The Ronald and Eileen Weiser Slovakia-University of Michigan Collaboration. Dr. Donn, M.D., Chief of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Michigan, was one of the first awardees of this program, and he has since returned on a regular basis to help improve the care provided to newborn infants in eastern Slovakia. Over this time, he has established a partnership with Dr. Krcho, M.D., Director of Neonatology at the Pavol Joseph Safaris Medical University. As a result of this collaboration, Dr. Krcho and Slovak colleagues recently had their first American paper published in the Journal of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. In the photo below, Drs. Krcho and Donn are posed with a Slovak infant who is being supported by one of four ventilators donated by the University of Michigan Health System to P.J. Safaris Medical University.
