The European Union Center for Excellence at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce that the EUC Annual Distinguished Lecture will be given by Desmond Dinan, arguably the world’s foremost historian of European integration. Professor Dinan’s talk, entitled “An Imperfect Union: Understanding European Integration,” will be held on October 14 at 4:00 pm. He will look at recent events in the European Union and assess the overall mood of member states toward integration. Dinan will look at both the institutional flaws of the EU and its remarkable achievements.

Desmond Dinan is professor of public policy at George Mason University. In 2009 he was named Ad personam Jean Monnet Chair in European Public Policy, the highest distinction for professors that the European Commission grants. He has been an adviser to the European Commission in Brussels and a visiting fellow at the Netherlands Institute for International Relations, The Hague. His research interests include the historiography of European integration; the history of the European Union; institutions and governance of the EU; enlargement of the EU; regional integration in the context of globalization; and prospects for global governance. He has written several books on the EU including Ever Closer Union: An Introduction to European Integration, now in its fourth edition. Since 1999, Dinan has written the article on institutions and governance in the annual review of EU developments for the Journal of Common Market Studies. Professor Dinan is a native of Ireland and a permanent resident of the United States.
