Summer Research Opportunities in India

In the summer of 2018, up to ten LSA undergraduates will have the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research with faculty at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune, India. Research opportunities are available in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The program will run from May 15-July 31, 2018, but may have some flexibility in length on a case-by-case basis. Housing and a basic stipend (to cover your meals) will be provided to all participants.

For the application, you will identify a research topic that must relate to one of the folllowing topics:

Archaeology / Museum Studies

  • Archaeology
  • Numismatics

Film/Screen Arts & Cultures

  • Any project related to Indian film

Islam

  • Islamic Architecture
  • Indo-Persian Cultural History

History

  • Early Modern Trade Networks
  • Indo-Persian Cultural History

History of the Science

  • Environmental history
  • Natural History
  • Colonial History of Science
  • History and Development of Astronomy in India
  • History of Zoology
  • History and Development of Mathematics in India
  • History and Development of Vakya system of Astronomy
  • Kerala School of Astronomy

Language and Linguistics

  • English language teaching
  • Scientific Literature in Sanskrit and Malayalam
  • Paninian Grammar

Language and Literature

  • Mythology
  • Manuscriptology
  • Postmodernist fiction
  • Magical Realism
  • Narrative Theories

To be eligible for the Michigan-IISER Student Exchange, you must be an LSA student that will have completed one year of study by the summer of 2018. Graduating seniors are eligible for this opportunity.

To be eligible for the Michigan-IISER Student Exchange, you must be an LSA student that will have completed one year of study by the summer of 2018. Graduating seniors are eligible for this opportunity.

Costs

Housing and a food stipend will be provided to student participants. Students will be housed in single occupancy rooms in the IISER Hostel (similar to residence halls), and a stipend will be provided for meals at the IISER canteen which will cover most or all of your food.

Students will be responsible for round-trip airfare, visa costs, and personal expenses. A budget estimate is included below, but this will vary based on personal spending habits and price variations. Funding opportunities for this program may be available.

Round-trip Airfare (Detroit-Mumbai): $1300
Indian Visa: $160
Personal Expenses (This will greatly depend on personal habits) $600
TOTAL $2060

Application Procedures

Applications are accepted in M-Compass. Apply using the 'Apply Now' button at the top of this page. The application requires students to complete the following on their M-Compass application checklist:

  • Complete a general application which includes the time period you would like to be in Pune, India.
  • Provide an outline of the research topic proposal in less than 500 words, making sure to include the following information. Assistance is available by scheduling an advising session:
    • What is your main research question?
    • Why is this research topic important?
    • What methodologies would you utilize to gather information and data? This can be broad at this time, but please include some examples.

Dates & Deadlines

  • Applications for Summer 2018 are due February 9, 2018.
  • Decisions will be issued February 23, 2018
  • Accepted students must confirm by February 28, 2018.
