Regional and National Initiatives

This collaborative project between the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, is funded by the US Department of Education’s Title VI. It is geared toward creating spaces for discussions of new research and curriculum development projects related to area studies among professors, graduate and undergraduate students, and school teachers from Puerto Rico.

As part of the effort to create sustainable links with institutions serving underrepresented populations, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Michigan collaborates with other area studies centers at U-M in this partnership with the Colleges of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico. There are no Title VI National Resources Centers on the island of Puerto Rico; there are also no Hispanic serving institutions in the State of Michigan. In creating ties between our institutions we are able to expand access to the area studies and language resources at U-M to the faculty and students at the UPR, to in-service teachers in the region around UPR, and to their K-12 students.

Political Tensions and Identity in a Globalized World

The proposal for this symposium is to discuss in different historical contexts the concept of political tensions and questions of identity in a globalized world.

These very popular and very successful workshops are co-sponsored and planned by the area studies centers in the International Institute and the School of Education in collaboration with the Eisenberg Institutes’ Global Dimensions Project. Workshops include presentations from historians and literary experts offering case studies in world history and literature. CSEAS sponsors two speakers to represent topics related to the overarching theme through the lens of Southeast Asia. Further, Bob Bain, Associate Professor of Education and History, leads discussions on pedagogy related to teaching world history, offering materials to help teachers organize and tie together the historical content.

WHaLI workshops provide area teachers with:

  • Engaging mini-lectures by some of the world’s greatest scholars on relevant content
  • Resources, including PowerPoint slides, primary sources, and documents
  • Materials created by U-M’s History Education Project (Bob Bain, director)
  • Pedagogical discussions and approaches to teaching this content to students
  • Opportunities to talk with other area teachers and instructors
  • Access to previous WHI workshop materials (including videos and PowerPoints) and sample lessons
  • Opportunities to earn CEUs (extra fee required)
  • Breakfast and lunch for all three days of the workshop

Teacher participants have praised the workshops for both the intellectual content and the approaches to teaching world history and literature. More significantly, teachers have used presentation materials and ideas with their students to enhance the ways they teach world history and literature.

CSEAS and other area studies centers at the U-M's International Institute are proud supporters of the Midwest Institute for International/Intercultural Education, a consortium of two-year colleges based in the Midwest region and which has expanded across the country. The MIIIE is dedicated to improving international studies and foreign language training at each member campus. CSEAS is a co-sponsor of the MIIIE’s annual August curriculum development workshops, traveling exhibitions, and sponsors visiting scholars from Southeast Asia to give talks to students at MIIIE's base, Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
