During the last few decades, scholars have used the categories of race, gender, and ethnicity to understand and incorporate the contributions of populations that were previously marginalized in academic works. These categories have been useful in the analysis of cultural dynamics, socioeconomic transformations, and political struggles. By unpacking the categories of race, gender, and ethnicity, and by looking at their intersections, scholars have contested and expanded on traditional notions of power, violence, identity, citizenship, and culture. Moreover, these categories have been important in advancing interdisciplinary knowledge by opening up multiple research possibilities for comparative and trans-regional works that have led to a general reassessment of national and area studies.
