About
Dr. Chen is a scholar of Chinese art history from the classical to the medieval periods, roughly from the Han to the Tang dynasties. In recent years, he has also worked on China-West encounters during the late imperial periods. Trained both in China and Europe, his work to date has, broadly speaking, dealt with three areas: art and archaeology of the Han dynasty, material culture along the Silk Roads, and historiography of the Vienna Schoolof Art History. In various projects he has utilized transcultural perspectives in studying Chinese art history in a global context.
