African Heritage and Humanities Initiative

The long-term goal of the African Heritage and Humanities Initiative (AHHI) is to deepen intellectual engagement, within the broader domain of African humanities, through research projects with African colleagues. The initiative aims to encourage the development of overlapping, intersecting research projects that bring African scholars into close conversation with U-M researchers to illuminate the dynamic, contested process by which African cultures and histories are made.

AHHI accomplishes these aims through organizing joint conferences and workshops and providing seed funding for collaborative research projects in the arts, humanities and interpretive social sciences. AHHI’s steering committee also reviews UMAPS applications in these fields, and many AHHI faculty have served as mentors for UMAPS scholars.
